Short Description
Lace catfish are generally peaceful as juveniles but may become territorial as they mature. It’s essential to provide plenty of hiding spots like plants, driftwood, and rocks in the aquarium. These fish are sometimes referred to as "false upside-down catfish." They adapt well to planted tanks, although subdued lighting is crucial to prevent stress and excessive hiding.
Due to their predatory nature, avoid keeping Lace catfish with smaller fish species. They should be housed with similarly sized tank mates. Multiple individuals can coexist if each has enough space to establish a small territory, reducing the chances of aggression. However, if you have more than one, avoid adding other bottom dwellers.
As with any species of fish they should be given the highest water quality, perform regular water changes and make sure that the substrate is free from detritus which can also lead to disease.
Food and Feeding
Feed Lace catfish with high-quality flake or tablet food as their staple diet. Supplement this with live or frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp. Be careful not to overfeed, as these fish are prone to bloating and digestive issues. They may always appear hungry, but it’s essential to stick to fixed feeding schedules, offering only what they can consume within five minutes.
Sexing
Determining the sex of Lace catfish is challenging when they are young. However, as they grow, females develop a rounder, plumper body shape.
Breeding
There are no verified reports of successful breeding of Synodontis nigrita in home aquariums. It is believed that they are substrate spawners.
