Food and Feeding

The Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) is an omnivorous species, enjoying a diverse diet that includes small insects, worms, crustaceans, and plant matter. To keep them healthy and maintain their vibrant colors, offer a varied diet comprising high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen treats such as brine shrimp and daphnia. Supplementing their diet with vegetables like blanched spinach or zucchini is also beneficial for their digestive health.

Sexing

Identifying male and female Congo Tetras is relatively easy. Males are more brightly colored, especially when fully mature, with vibrant blue, red, and green hues. They also possess longer and more flowing caudal and dorsal fins than females, who tend to be smaller and display a more subdued coloration.

Breeding

Congo Tetras are egg scatterers, and breeding can be achieved in captivity with proper preparation. A separate breeding tank with a soft, acidic pH (around 6.0–6.5) and gentle water flow is ideal. Once spawning occurs, promptly remove the adults from the tank to protect the eggs, as they may consume them. The eggs typically hatch within 6–7 days, but Congo Tetra fry are slower to grow compared to other species like cichlids. Feed the fry infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp, gradually transitioning to larger foods as they develop.

Lifespan

With appropriate care, Congo Tetras can live up to 5 years in a well-maintained aquarium. A stable environment, clean water, and a balanced diet are key to achieving their full lifespan.

Origin

The Congo Tetra is endemic to the Congo River Basin in western Africa. This region’s slow-moving rivers and clear, soft waters provide a natural habitat rich in vegetation and food sources. Replicating these conditions in captivity helps keep Congo Tetras comfortable and healthy.

Tank Requirements

To mimic their natural habitat, Congo Tetras thrive in a well-planted aquarium with ample swimming space and gentle water flow. A tank of at least 100 liters (26 gallons) is recommended for a small group. Maintain a temperature between 23-26°C (73.4-78.8°F) and a pH of 6-7.5. These fish are peaceful and do well in community tanks with other calm species. Ensure the tank has a secure lid, as they may occasionally jump when startled.

Short Description

The Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) is a captivating, peaceful species known for its shimmering colors and graceful, flowing fins. Native to the Congo River, this fish requires stable water conditions and a varied diet to maintain its health and vibrant appearance. Ideal for community tanks, Congo Tetras bring a stunning display to any aquarium with the right lighting and care.
