January tetra originates from South America, mainly found in Brazil.

Sexing

The male is slimmer and smaller than the female, it will also have a small hook on the anal fin.

Breeding

January tetras can be a hard fish to breed but once successful they will scatter their eggs around the tank. In nature they will lay their eggs on any plant life; this should be re-created in the breeding tank. The eggs should hatch after 24 hours and the fry will become free swimming after 3 days. They should be fed on crushed flake or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Lifespan

The January Tetra should live for 2 years if given optimum water conditions.
