Food and feeding

To get the best colours from these fish, supply Gold tetras with plenty of live or frozen foods. Use quality flake as the staple diet but give them plenty of treats including white worms and brine shrimp.

Origin

South America; Gold tetras are found in the Amazonian Basins.

Sexing

Males will be more colourful than the females and have a white tint on the front of the anal fin. The females will be plumper than the males but their bellies do not swell up with eggs as much as they do with other tetras.

Breeding

Hemigrammus rodwayi can be a little harder to breed than other tetras but it is definitely possible. Supply them with a tank that contains soft, acidic water and add some fine leaved plants. The eggs will be scattered around the tank and should hatch after 5 days. The fry will be very small, only feed them on Infusoria for the first few days and as they grow you can feed them with newly hatched brine shrimp.
