Food and feeding

Although Spotted bettas will accept all foods offered they much prefer live or frozen foods. Blood worms, brine shrimp and white worms are ideal.

Origin

Asia; Spotted bettas are found in Sumatra, Java and Malaysia.

Sexing

Males will have a broader head shape than the females. They will also display more intense colouration and on their anal fins there will be a dark stripe. This will be much fainter on the female’s anal fin.

Breeding

Mostly it will be the female that will initiate the spawning process. The couple will embrace at the bottom of the tank and when the eggs are laid, the female will pick them up and spit them at the male so that he can collect them in his mouth. When the fry are free swimming, they can be fed on Infusoria for a few days, after this they will accept newly hatched brine shrimp or crushed flake.

Lifespan

The expected life span for Betta picta is 2-3 years.

Short description

Betta picta will need a well planted tank with plenty of hiding places. They can be created by adding rocks or wood to the tank. The Spotted Betta will spend most of its time hiding and will probably only emerge at feeding times.
