Food and feeding
Although Halfbeaks will accept quality flake or frozen foods, they prefer live foods and will do much better with them. Insect larvae or similar should be given.
Origin
Asia; Halfbeaks are found in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.
Sexing
Males have a modified anal fin to form a gonopodium.
Breeding
Hemirhamphodon pogonognathus are live bearers but do not produce many fry with each batch. The male will chase the female until she accepts him and then the gestation period can be up to 8 weeks. The fry will have the same length of jaw when they are young, the extended lower jaw doesn’t form until they start to mature. The fry will accept crushed flake or brine shrimp immediately.
Lifespan
The expected life span of Hemirhamphodon pogonognathus is 3-4 years.
Short description
A planted tank should be provided with floating plants included. They do not like a strong water current and subdue the lighting. Open swimming places should also be provided. Thanks to Jan Wirén for picture.
