Origin
The Forktail Rainbowfish (Pseudomugil furcatus) originates from the rainforest streams of Papua New Guinea. It inhabits clear, slow-moving waters with dense vegetation, making it a perfect candidate for a planted aquarium.
Feeding
Forktail Rainbowfish are omnivorous and should be offered a varied diet for optimal health. While they will readily accept high-quality flakes, supplement their diet with vegetable-based granules, small live foods like brine shrimp or daphnia, and occasional treats of finely chopped vegetables. This variety not only enhances their color but also ensures they receive essential nutrients.
Sexing
Distinguishing between males and females is relatively easy. Males exhibit brighter colors, particularly in their fins, which often appear more vibrant and elongated compared to females. The females, while still colorful, tend to have smaller, less vivid fins.
Breeding
Forktail Rainbowfish are prolific egg-layers, known to scatter their eggs among plants, rocks, and other surfaces in the aquarium. To encourage breeding, provide plenty of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or spawning mops, where the female can deposit her eggs. After spawning, it's best to remove the parents, as they may eat the eggs. The eggs typically hatch in 10-14 days. Once the fry are free-swimming, feed them with infusoria or finely crushed flakes. As they grow, gradually introduce them to newly hatched brine shrimp for better development.
Tank Requirements
Due to their small size and active nature, Forktail Rainbowfish are best kept in a tank of at least 40 liters (10 gallons). They prefer well-planted tanks with plenty of swimming space and subdued lighting. Maintaining the water temperature between 22-24°C (71.6-75.2°F) is crucial, along with a slightly alkaline pH range of 7-8. Keep the water hardness between 8-18°N (142.86-321.43ppm) for optimal health. Additionally, a gentle filtration system that promotes some water movement is recommended to mimic their natural habitat.
Temperament
Forktail Rainbowfish are peaceful and get along well with other similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. They are schooling fish, so keeping them in groups of at least 6 is recommended to bring out their best colors and natural behavior. Avoid housing them with larger or predatory fish, as they might be mistaken for food due to their small size.
Lifespan
Under proper care, Forktail Rainbowfish can live for 2-3 years. Providing a stable environment with high water quality and a balanced diet can help extend their lifespan.
