Food and feeding

As these fish cannot actually close their mouths, they eat by crushing the food with their throat muscles. Because of this try to feed them softer pellets and a quality flake. They will also relish treats of blood worms and brine shrimp.

Origin

The Blood Parrot is a hybrid fish so has no natural habitat.

Sexing

These fish are almost impossible to sex due to finnage variations with different breeder’s fish.

Breeding

On the whole, male blood parrots will be infertile. There are some cases of these breeding in the aquarium but not many. The female will lay her eggs on a flat stone and both parents will protect the brood. Most times the eggs will develop fungus or be eaten by the parents after a few days.

Lifespan

The expected life span for Blood parrot cichlid is 10 years.

Short description

Blood parrot cichlids are messy eaters so demand high filtration for the tank with regular water changes. They can be kept singly or in small groups but when they reach adult size they will require a larger tank.
