Origin
South America; Pterophyllum leopoldi are found in the Amazonian River Basins.
Sexing
It is extremely difficult to sex angelfish, if required for breeding it is best to purchase a small group and let them pair naturally.
Breeding
A spawning site will be chosen, this is normally the tank glass or use a piece of slate leant against the sides, and both fish will clean the site. A line of eggs will be laid and the male will follow to fertilise them. This process will be repeated several times. A few days later the eggs should hatch and a week after this the fry will be free swimming. At this stage they can be fed on newly hatched brine shrimp.
Lifespan
The expected life span for Angelfish is 5-10 years.
Short description
Although Angelfish are classed as a peaceful species, they are renowned for eating small tank mates. They are best kept with Rasboras or the larger tetras.
